Bae, we need to talk about your “Words that should be banned in 2015” article. That thing you wrote for Time makes you some like some basic bitch who’s worried about being bossy concerned she might disrupt the natural order of things by admitting that the word feminist is not only a word that’s never going to be worn out, but one you should be embracing.

How can you, a woman who’s looking to be an empowered voice on the web, suggest that we give that word up?

I can’t even…

I have no doubt you’d rather be an influencer in the world and create powerful articles that change people’s minds. That you worry that, as a woman, if you’re not edgy and unique, you may be relegated to writing silly articles about kale. That you literally worry about using words like “om nom nom” because someone will think you’re a “girl” instead of a “woman”.

But, here’s the thing, Katy. We need that word. Because, and I’m not trying to be obvi here, but when we live in a word where women are not equal, where we’re called names just for being women, where we are paid less, treated as less, respected less, just because of our gender, that word matters.

That word pisses people off because it reminds them that it’s necessary.

“I’m a woman who’s totally okay with being treated like a second class citizen”. – said no one ever.

I think you wrote this because you’re trying to be cool. But, throwing your gender’s equality under the bus to make a point is beyond uncool and makes you look desperate. #sorrynotsorry.

Instead of saying you need to get turnt, I’m going to suggest that maybe you might want to look at this again and consider that you just devalued yourself. You’re smarted than that. You’re more talented than that.

You’re better than that.

The editors over at The Mary Sue wrote up a post addressing some concerns readers have had about some of the recent changes to the site up to and including a recent merger. It’s long, it’s thoughtful and it’s getting a LOT of comments.

I’d like to share my thoughts on that post and the reaction, but I do feel it’s important to share this tweet so you know my take general take on this situation.

Okay, so, there’s that part. The rest, well, I wanted to address certain comments and concerns and — since I have my own blog and it’s way easier than commenting to a bunch of posts on their site, I’m gonna do it here.

After the break. ::grin:: Cause I’m likely to be long winded.

Let me preface this by saying change sucks. But think about this — as much as you individually may hate certain changes, imagine how it must be for an entire blogging team to have to deal with the changes and then have to deal with a bajillion reactions to those changes.

If you think this is hard for you, imagine what it’s like for them?

Okay, so to address some of the points people have made.

1) The reaction to the design changes made by TMS and Geekosystem’s parent company Abrams media.

Companies make design changes all the time. For any number of reasons. Remember when io9 had the huge redesign and people flipped out? The content didn’t change, but people had to get used to the new layout. It was strange, it was foreign, but io9 is part of the Gawker network and the parent company did a redesign to bring it in line with the rest of their sites. This isn’t new. It may not be comfy, but it isn’t new.

The changes were made for reasons. Whatever they were, they’re not personal. It’s business. They’re also cosmetic in nature. If you have issues with the layout, add TMS to a feed reader and read the articles on something you feel is more user friendly. I like Feedly. I use it often because I read a lot of things.

In the end, if you’re looking at design over content, then you’re missing the point of TMS.

2) The Tagline.

Okay, so I get the value of a tagline. Heck, my whole name is a frickin’ tagline in the sense that it very clearly tells you who I am and what I’m about. However, it’s not WHO I am just like the tagline wasn’t what TMS is. Sure, it was nice and it was fun and it told geek girls quickly that they were in a likeminded zone, but it’s not the mission statement for TMS.

It got removed because of a design chose. Which I addressed above. Sucks but is it a deal breaker vs. the content?

3) TMS is a feminist site. Why did they change that?

There wasn’t a change. I’m pretty sure this is one of the first postings for the site in which Susana Polo broke it down. There’s no use of the word “feminist” in the post. There’s also no mention of a “no boys allowed” policy. In fact, Susana actually says “we want to play with the boys”.

Sure, when it started, it was all women writing it. But it seems to me the real point wasn’t about who was writing the content, but who they were writing it for. The female geek. Has that changed?

I mean, female geeks like science and movies and make up and technology and social media and cute dresses and I know you’re going to make a comment about the fleshlight post, but I’ll tell you a secret — as a woman, I’d totally buy that for my husband. TBH, I don’t think he’d use it, but I’d buy it for a number of reasons.

But if you don’t like it, skip the post.

4) Adding Geekosystem to the mix. aka Merger of DOOOOOOM.

In all seriousness, why does this bug you? First of all, TMS gained some kick ass new writers because of this merger with Geekosystem (I’m looking at you, Victoria McNally among others) and gained new male writers.

Is it the addition of men in general? Are men unable to exist in what you feel is a feminist space? Are men inherently non-feminist? Do men have cooties? Was it about having a safe space and now that men are here it’s not safe?

Honestly, why does it bug you?

As I said above, TMS is still aimed to geek women and continues to be one of the most geek girl friendly sites out there.

5) Let’s talk about Glen.

I know some people have taken Glen Tickle to task for his “non apology apology” (their quote, not mine) and that they feel like they don’t want to read TMS because he’s one of the managing editors.

Here’s my take on that.

Personally, I’ve always been a person who reads certain authors more than others on any number of sites. There are some authors who I avoid because I dislike their writing style or because their “voice” doesn’t grab me, or for a couple of other reasons. But I don’t stop reading the site unless that person becomes responsible for writing 100% of the content for that site.

You say there are may reasons you love TMS and many authors you enjoy. So, isn’t it possible to check the bylines and read the authors you like?

While someone may be a managing editor, it’s been my experience that the authors at TMS keep their interegity intact and say what they say in their own voice. Not someone else’s. In the end, one person’s comments at a time of stress isn’t a mission statement for the site as a whole.

Additionally, I think we’ve all said things we regret in a moment of upset. I know I’ve said some very shitty things when I felt like I was being attacked, especially when it was en masse and about something I care about greatly. In my mind, Glen DID apologize. It was a two paragraph apology in the middle of a larger written apology and, while it may not have included the words “I’m sorry”, those words could certainly be inferred.

If “I’m sorry” is what you need to hear to know that Glen’s sorry for what he said, then you’re likely going to be out of luck. Not because he can’t say it but because, even if he does say it now, people will then jump on him and say “You’re only saying that to appease people!”

6) The summary.

In the end, you have to look at what you want from The Mary Sue and then compare that to what you get. If you’re in the 75% range, then I’d say you’re doing pretty well. You’re never going to get 100% of what you want because, think about it, if you get 100% of what you want, then it’s pretty likely that most of the rest of the readership isn’t getting 100% of what they want.

The authors on TMS need to eat, and pay rent, and get to work, and have clothing and deserve to make a living. You being mad that it’s not 3 girls in a basement somewhere doing this 100% for love and “fuck the man” if he wants to make choices on a business level is kind of selfish on your part.

Look, the entire staff at TMS works hard and they give it their all and they care. They care enough to write long posts and take heat and listen to readers. But it seems like, no matter what they say, some people will respond “That’s not enough” and act like no one understands their pain.

But do you realize that you’re very likely crapping on people who are doing their best for you? How would you feel if someone did that to you?

It’s an entertainment website. Maybe it’s worth enjoying the good, ignoring the bad and letting people get into the groove with the new merger?

Because, in the end, geeks need to stick together. We’re better than this. We should be nicer to one another.

This video of Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough has been going around because Mika, pretty rightly, asked “Can we go back to news school for a second?” while the rest of the panel was theorizing about Malaysian Airways flight MH370.

But there’s something that bugs me a lot more about it and that’s the reaction she gets. Especially from Scarborough. It’s such a “hush now, get back in the kitchen” or a “the little woman had a bit too much to drink” way of treating her and I find it really…gross.

Even as a staunch liberal, I usually like Scarborough but I really wish Mika had called him out for this loutish behavior. Joe tweeted about this, saying he was kidding. But it didn’t feel like kidding.

We really should be over this sort of thing.

I was boppin’ around on EW.com’s Supernatural section and the thought happened again and then typing happened.

I’ve been muddling this over a while and I’m just going to share it and see if anyone else agrees or not.

There’s this entire subplot called “Dean always has to step in and ‘save’ Sam”. Whether it’s the big things or the small things, when it comes down to it and someone has to be the guy who’s incapacitated/about to die and one has to be the guy who comes in and saves ’em, there’s really only one way that looks.

Okay, save for Jensen and the doped pudding and, really, it was pudding so you know they had to give it to him.

Look at the last couple of episodes, then look back further and ask yourself what would have happened if the roles were reversed?

Putting in a break cause SPOILERS!

Okay, so. A couple observations.

“The Purge” – Jensen gets pudding face, but Sam gets incapacitated and Dean saves the day.

“Sharp Teeth” – Sam ends up chained to a tractor while Dean does the whole tricking the werewolves with scent and saves Sam and everyone else.

Those two things. Just those two. Tell me why either one couldn’t have gone the other way?

Sam’s a smart guy. He would decoy himself with a jacket. He would be that cold about killing those dudes if it meant saving Dean. Why do we have him chained to a tractor or being incapacitated by a fat sucking fish face monster?

It’s those times where the writers seem to automatically put Sam in the “needs to be rescued” category — which sets up Dean needing to come save the day. It makes Sam look weak and then like a brat when he’s mad at Dean for always saving him.

I don’t even know if the writers know how often they do it. I don’t know if it’s intentional. But I feel like they’d benefit by sharing the rescuing duties a bit more if we’re ever supposed to believe that there’s any equality with these two.

Please, someone discuss this with me. It’s driving me crazy!

Okay, if you stayed, then I now need to apologize for NSFW language. ‘Cause it’s coming.

I watched this video last night and I’m still pissed this morning. I woke up and the first thing I thought about was just how fucking pissed I was about this woman’s behavior and her absolute shamelessness as she both throws feminism under the bus and talks out of both sides of her mouth at the same time.

Some background: San Diego mayor Bob Filner has been accused of sexual harassment by no less than 8 women. There’s an entire timeline over at the AP, but basically here’s the deal.

When women started coming forward, he denied it. More women, he denied it and said he wouldn’t resign. More women and then some policy was put into place where he wouldn’t be allowed to be in the same room with a woman alone and that his chief of staff would be in the room if he was with women. That CoS quit after having had the job only 10 days. New CoS was appointed. 2 more women came forward and then Filner announced he was taking two weeks off for “treatment” during a press conference.

The city is trying to recall him, people are suing and Filner even had the gall to ask the city of San Diego to pay his legal fees. Their answer was no. I like to imagine they added “fuck you very much”, but that’s just me.

Up to this point, I was disgusted but I figured the city of San Diego would work it out and they didn’t see to have any tolerance for his shenanigans.

Then I saw this interview done by Melissa Harris Perry who was filling in for Rachel Maddow last night. Melissa interviewed Lee Burdick, Filner’s new Chief of Staff, and I lost it.

There’s not a single doubt in my mind that this women is setting herself up to be named an interim mayor of the city or will run once the job is vacated. She seems to love using words like “allegations” and “truth” but she has them completely out of context in this case.

Somehow, she manages to acknowledge Filner’s actions and deny that there’s any truth to the women’s allegations all in the same interview. Melissa Harris Perry does a great job here, but I think even she was left speechless by the utter gall of this woman.

The idea that this woman can sit here, straight faced, forwarding her agenda while literally stepping on women who have been harassed by the asshole she’s “defending” makes me sick. The idea that she thinks using legal nuance makes it okay? Well, that made me want to punch her in the face.

So, yeah, fuck this bitch. /end rant

One minute things were normal and then my entire feed changed into one long scroll of Boston related tweets.

Well, most of my feed. Here and there there were people who I could tell hadn’t heard yet, or were tweeting news stories or whatever it is we all talk about as we blather away. However, as the minutes passed, I saw those same people come to the news and the feed evolved.

I wish I could explain how important that scroll was for me yesterday. My heart was breaking, my friends were afraid, people needed help, no one knew how bad it was, and we were all there together reading along — doing what small part we could do to share the news and share the pain in a way only social media allows.

I also decided, once the news broke, that any and all social media “work” I had planned for the day was going to have to wait. My job as Geek Girl Diva (the brand) was to shut up and get out of the way. My job as a person was to do what I could to be of assistance and do what I could to be part of the information flow to help others.

Others felt as I did. One, very specifically, was Janna O’Shea, who tweeted:

Note, neither one of those tweets had any judgmental language. They were opinions and, given the NRA tweet that went out the morning after the Aurora shootings, there was thinking behind it.

We both got tweets suggesting we were out of line to suggest such a thing and that there was nothing wrong with scheduled tweets and doing regular social media.

So, allow me to clarify. Nothing about this is “right” or “wrong”. It’s my opinion based on my experience as a user and broadcaster on social media platforms. There I was in the middle of a tragic event, reading Twitter as a way to cope and support others and the incongruity of some obviously automated tweet (or tweet from a blog post feed – I count those as automated) felt like a shock and stood out like a sore thumb.

I’m also not the only one who thought it might be worth looking into. Social media heavyweights like Chris Pirillo and Chris Brogan did some asking around as well.

I’m guessing part of what precipitated both questions was the fact that people were suggesting that maybe yesterday wasn’t the day to do “business as usual”.

And my response, which may be the entire point of this post, was that it may come down to a calculation of “event magnitude vs. message amplitude”.

I think you have to ask yourself as a company, as a brand, and as a person, the following question. Is your doing business during something like yesterday is going to yield you more positive than negative results?

If you have, for example, 1.2 million followers and you just keep tweeting away as tragic events happen, that’s a lot of people who see you going on as if nothing is happening and, in my opinion, like you don’t care.

Now, here’s the thing. I’m not 100% sure, but I’m betting people were suggesting that maybe Guy should tone down the automation and that he may have sounded callous in the wake of what was happening.

If that’s what he was tweeting in response to, well…that’s a lot of “amplitude” on just what you think of the people following you — and I’d be really interested to know. A quick search of tweets at him revealed a lot of irritated people.

And, just think would he could have accomplished if he’d used his powers for good? If he’d been tweeting from the beginning and helping spread the word? I mean, even if you’re callous about it, think about the RT’s and goodwill and general positives you would have gotten out of it.

Instead, because he didn’t take a moment to stop and ask himself about the “magnitude to amplitude” ratio. Instead, he pretty much amplified what a douchecanoe he can be.

In the end, maybe the takeaway is this — social media is social first and media second. Just because it’s online doesn’t mean it’s any less noticeable when you look like the guy walking down the street during a tragic event passing out flyers for 5 bucks off a large pizza down the street.

You have a voice. Use it for good. The trick is knowing which “good” is best at the time.

Avoiding being a douchecanoe? Well, that’s just a bonus.

The basic info is this. According to Blastr and The Mary Sue, fans who have been making and selling their versions of the Jayne hat for, oh I dunno, the last 10 year, are being hit with “cease and desist” notices from Fox.

Yep. Since Ripple Junction now has an official license to make the Jayne hat, any independent Browncoat knitter making and selling them is now making an item that infringes on their license and Fox is sending notices to enforce that license.

“in the last few weeks many of them have received cease-and-desist letters or have simply been banned from Etsy for producing DIY Jayne Hats.”

And, yes, I know, they came from Fox, but do you think Fox was trolling Etsy to see if people were making Jayne hats in their spare time to help Ripple Junction out? Yeah, no. Ripple Junction, worrying about market share, likely informed Fox Legal and legal did what it does.

That just…grrrrrr.

And here’s why it pisses me off.

As you may know, I worked over at QMx for over a year and a half and QMx has officially licensed Firefly merchandise. QMx has the license for Firefly prop replicas and the Firefly Jayne Hat is, while wearable, a prop replica. Which means QMx could have made it and just didn’t.

Now, I don’t know why they never did, but I have a theory.

My former boss is a Browncoat to the core. He started QMx because he wanted to make prop replicas and because he was a fan. QMx started with Firefly and Serenity and they’ve made some really amazing stuff. But they left the hat to the fans.

Because those hats, like the one Ma Cobb made for Jayne, we made with love and with care and with small imperfections — and every one of them was unique.

Just like Jayne and just like Firefly.

So, somehow Ripple Junction gets the license for the hat and they’ll be made in mass quantities for pennies in China. Fine. Hey, whatever floats your boat, RJ.

But you couldn’t be happy to take the Browncoat money hand over fist and leave the crafters alone? Because mom and pop shops making Jayne hats was really going to cut into your financial bottom line that much?

Really?

Not cool.

Single man shares sexual tweets with a stripper, she tries to blackmail him, he doesn’t pay (because he did nothing illegal). She goes to his boss and they fire him for indecency?

As I tweeted: It’s interesting to see how prevalent sex shaming is. Heaven forbid you should be a sexual creature & express yourself at all.

Y’know how Team Unicorn put out a video and a wave of people came out to unleash anger and vitriol and talk about how they’re not real geek girls and pandering and all that?

(If not, just go check the comments on their latest video for “For The Win” over on You Tube.)

I’ve seen a lot of commenting about the reaction, and the whole geek girls/pandering/hot chicks faking it thing came up again. (le sigh).

And I know it bugs people every time it happens. I know people come out and defend and feel angry and geek women want to Hulk smash and geek men want to come out and say “I’m not like those neanderthals” and all of that…

Well, I had a thought last night and I won’t leave my brain, so I want to share it and maybe that’ll put it to rest.

The people who go to the trouble to spew anger and/or hate and/or OMG HOT FAKE GEEK GIRLS SPEWING GEEK REFERENCES HAWWWWWWTTT NOT are trolls.

Trolls.

Those same people would be just as mean and angry and OMG about a video that was made by “regular looking” geek girls. But then they’d be laughing at how their ass didn’t fit in the costume, or how skinny they were or how their glasses looked or how girls don’t actually play video games and OMG FAKE GEEK GIRLS.

Trolls.

That’s all they are. They’re not looking for reasoned debate. They’re not looking to have a conversation. And they’re just as prevalent on geek sites as they are You Tube. They may be a bit less mean, but they happen.

And I think it comes down to one of two mindsets on the part of the poster:

1) That girl totally wouldn’t fuck me. Not ever. Screw her. FAKE!

2) I wouldn’t touch that with someone else’s dick. No way. FAKE.

I’m not saying everyone who questions the nature of women and their geekdom is a troll and I’m not saying that conversation isn’t good, but identifying trolls helps up better decide where we want to use the energy to fight and where we can just call a troll a troll and choose a more effective tactic.

That’s what Team Unicorn did. They called out the Unicorn Geek Corps to down vote the negative and leave positive comments. They used the system trolls love to use against them.

I think there’s a lesson in that.

Avoiding spoilers is a bitch. In this case, avoiding spoiling others.

I’m currently reading Game of Thrones (half way through Storm of Swords) and there’s so much going on that I just want to commiserate with someone about it!

I mean, stuff’s happening and I’m all swept up and I just want to be able to say things like “OMG, I can’t believe REDACTED would do that to REDACTED and WTF is up with REDACTED? I never thought someone was going to make me like him! Damn you GRRM!”

But I can’t. Not publicly. Not even with the Geekboy because I’ve passed where he is in the book and so I’m respecting that he hasn’t read it and avoiding spoilers. I can’t tweet, I can’t Facebook. I’m bursting to the gills with OMGWTF and I have to hold it in.

And it’s not just GoT!

I’m in a conversation with 4 other people last night who are all in various stages of completion with watching Doctor Who & Sherlock and we’re trying to all talk about things without saying too much — all the while worried that we’ll say that one thing that will spoil everything for the ones who are still on the 10th Doctor and just met River Song. And I want to just say so many things and I can’t and I thought my head would pop and arrrghhhhh.

Y’know that smile River does when she says “Spoilers”? I think it’s her way of not looking totally batshit insane because of all the secrets she has to keep.

That’s my theory and I’m stickin’ to it.

But let me ask you this, and answer honestly…

If you disagree with me, will you be content with simply thinking it? Or maybe commenting here and leaving it at that? Or will you, like most of online humanity these days, not only disagree with me, but then broadcast on Twitter or FB that you disagree with me – and then add thoughts and considerations about my motives, my sex life (or lack there of) or my level of intelligence.

Seriously. I’m asking. Pause a second and think about that. Do you, have you, or will you do that this week? This month? And, if so, about how many things?

If you look at the last week and the things people have raged about online, it spans the gamut. The Aurora shooting, Chik-Fil-A, TDKR spoilers/negative reviews, geek girl poseurs/booth babes and what constitutes what, Obamacare, Bane Capital, and more I’m forgetting now.

That’s a lot of different things involving a lot of different people with a lot of different opinions.

But one things was the same.

The outrage.

I’ve said before; if everything’s a big deal, then nothing’s a big deal.

The more I find myself feeling pissed off about something on the Internet, the more I realize I’m in a bad mood, or cranky, or edgy, or just plain “over” it. And, when I look at it honestly, a lot of that is self generated. Because I keep putting myself back in the loop of being angry about something and then, in a need to say something about it, share it and bitch about it.

What I thought about today was this — it’s not enough that we disagree with something. In this day and age, we not only need to disagree, but do so vociferously and then broadcast that disagreement and get others to disagree right along with us.

Maybe it’s an outgrowth of the whole social channel dynamic. You get so used to talking about things, that you talk about everything and it all matters. Whether it’s the cereal you ate for breakfast or your gut deep belief that gays shouldn’t get married, you want to broadcast it out and get a response. Because a response means something.

And before you say it doesn’t, ask yourself if you feel differently when a post or tweet you make gets responses as opposed to one that doesn’t. I know I’ve had it happen, about some seriously stupid content. ::grin:: I’m human. I crave validation.

But maybe it’s time to decide that, while we may need that validation, maybe we need to be a bit more willing to just disagree with certain things quietly and save the real outrage for the big stuff. The stuff that makes a difference in a very real way.

So that, when we rage, we rage with real power and, unlike now, our voice won’t get lost in a cacophony of other voices bitching about how 7-11 didn’t have their favorite creamer.

This is just my thoughts. Like I said, feel free to disagree. I hope that you’ll look at it and see something you feel is worth agreeing with and maybe share it as a positive instead of a negative.

But if you think I’m invalidating you all over the place, then have at it. I just ask one favor. Don’t tweet the post if you disagree with me. I read the comments. Flame me all ya like there. But let’s see if we can keep the raging to a minimum in regard to my invalidation of your opinion. ::grin::

1) You knew it was a troll-y piece of girl bashing fluff and posted it anyway. At which point it’s just link bait (you’ll note I’m not linking to you) and, as my friend Scott Weinberg commented, “yellow journalism”.

2) You read it and actually thought it was well written “satire” and ran it.

Either one of those things worries me more that the idea that Jessie Heyman wrote a piece of tripe that pretty much reinforces every bad stereotype about women there is. I mean, it makes women as a whole look like air headed fools and makes men look like insecure assholes who need a woman to “stroke” their egos because they want to go to a super hero movie.

That’s my issue.

The article shouldn’t have been approved, in my opinion.

Of course, my estrogen level pretty much means I’m an idiot, right? ;-)
