This video of Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough has been going around because Mika, pretty rightly, asked “Can we go back to news school for…

This video of Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough has been going around because Mika, pretty rightly, asked “Can we go back to news school for a second?” while the rest of the panel was theorizing about Malaysian Airways flight MH370.

But there’s something that bugs me a lot more about it and that’s the reaction she gets. Especially from Scarborough. It’s such a “hush now, get back in the kitchen” or a “the little woman had a bit too much to drink” way of treating her and I find it really…gross.

Even as a staunch liberal, I usually like Scarborough but I really wish Mika had called him out for this loutish behavior. Joe tweeted about this, saying he was kidding. But it didn’t feel like kidding.

We really should be over this sort of thing.

I need to rant. It’s political in nature and relates to a sex scandal in San Diego, so feel free to just skip it if…

I need to rant. It’s political in nature and relates to a sex scandal in San Diego, so feel free to just skip it if you’re not interested. I totally understand.

Okay, if you stayed, then I now need to apologize for NSFW language. ‘Cause it’s coming.

I watched this video last night and I’m still pissed this morning. I woke up and the first thing I thought about was just how fucking pissed I was about this woman’s behavior and her absolute shamelessness as she both throws feminism under the bus and talks out of both sides of her mouth at the same time.

Some background: San Diego mayor Bob Filner has been accused of sexual harassment by no less than 8 women. There’s an entire timeline over at the AP, but basically here’s the deal.

When women started coming forward, he denied it. More women, he denied it and said he wouldn’t resign. More women and then some policy was put into place where he wouldn’t be allowed to be in the same room with a woman alone and that his chief of staff would be in the room if he was with women. That CoS quit after having had the job only 10 days. New CoS was appointed. 2 more women came forward and then Filner announced he was taking two weeks off for “treatment” during a press conference.

The city is trying to recall him, people are suing and Filner even had the gall to ask the city of San Diego to pay his legal fees. Their answer was no. I like to imagine they added “fuck you very much”, but that’s just me.

Up to this point, I was disgusted but I figured the city of San Diego would work it out and they didn’t see to have any tolerance for his shenanigans.

Then I saw this interview done by Melissa Harris Perry who was filling in for Rachel Maddow last night. Melissa interviewed Lee Burdick, Filner’s new Chief of Staff, and I lost it.

There’s not a single doubt in my mind that this women is setting herself up to be named an interim mayor of the city or will run once the job is vacated. She seems to love using words like “allegations” and “truth” but she has them completely out of context in this case.

Somehow, she manages to acknowledge Filner’s actions and deny that there’s any truth to the women’s allegations all in the same interview. Melissa Harris Perry does a great job here, but I think even she was left speechless by the utter gall of this woman.

The idea that this woman can sit here, straight faced, forwarding her agenda while literally stepping on women who have been harassed by the asshole she’s “defending” makes me sick. The idea that she thinks using legal nuance makes it okay? Well, that made me want to punch her in the face.

Allow me to note. I don’t talk politics often and the thoughts are mine alone. I’m disabling comments because I have no interest in trolls.

Updated.

The Onion’s Baratunde Thurston has put into words what I can never say. I think it is, in a word, amazing.

I will never know the pain this man feels. The anger. The disbelief. Not on this level. As a Jew, I understand people hating me simply because of my blood, but anti-semitism seems to remain fringe enough, unlike birtherism. That says so many things. None of which I consider positive.

via Deux Ex Malcontent

Earlier today:

I have MSNBC on in the background as I work (I know, I know. ::grin:: Shush) and Keli Goff just made a statement that both explained a lot and pissed me off.

Mind you, I’m paraphrasing, but it was essentially, “We’d like to be covering other things instead of Donald Trump and the birther issues, but that’s where the readers are.”

I thought news was supposed to be about what the news was. News was about informing people about the things the needed to know, not entertaining them.

Reporters report on what readers want to read and then people assume things based off the reports?

But considering most of the normal people are out doing things like having lives and, oh I dunno, being normal, the fringe elements get to sit home and rack up pageviews and influence the news?

That’s…informative.

I mean, think about it. A sitting president just released his frakkin’ birth certificate to shut Donald Trump up. Because Trump’s nonsense was causing too much of a distraction to other news. Because the news organizations think Donald Trump IS news instead of an attention whore.

Sideshow indeed.

Meh.

I have no idea why I’m so busy posting today. I feel like I’ve been on semi auto-pilot for a while now. It’s likely due to the fact that I’ve been battling some sort of fatigue/illness/alien invasion that we can’t quite pinpoint yet., but I have a feeling it’s also due to the fact that my brain is just…tired.

There have been so many things going on in the world recently. Amazing, terrifying, world changing, intellectually frustrating things. From countries fighting for independence to Republicans literally trying to make miscarriages a crime. I mean, every day there’s some major things happening that makes me react and, as the days go on, I can’t tell any more just how much my reacting is actually going to do or what good it will cause.

During the presidential press conference today, a reporter asked the president about Libya and the NFL lockout in the same question.

The NFL lockout? Wait, you want to ask a question about a union fighting for rights and, instead of asking if the president is going to intervene in Wisconsin, you ask about the NFL? Now, I’m not saying the NFL isn’t important and they have reasons for their disputes with management, but how in the heck do the financial lives of people who make millions of dollars trump the financial lives of people in the public sector who have been protesting to keep their collective bargaining rights?

Oh right, because the NFL is American and the story isn’t 15 days old. Still, 15 days of a protest should be more newsworthy, right? Or is my moral outrage meter off? Should I worry more about the NFL than the women in South Dakota? Or should I give more attention to the shooting in Germany? Or..

I’m having a hard time trying to wrap my head around the fact that the things I’m upset about. Things like women’s reproductive rights and the fact that more and more people think Obama was born in Kenya, or that NASA gets grief for the small amount of funding it receives or that WIC should get cut over branding on a NASCAR racer’s bumper…

I just…my moral outrage button is worn out.

So I’m posting pics and videos and hoping that, in the end, somewhere I’ll get my energy back and be able to get it working again.

Until then, will you guys try and be outraged for me?

I generally keep the politics off the blog and try to keep it to myself. But grant me just a little leeway today.

1) If you’re in the US — Vote. Please go vote. I don’t care who you vote for, but if you have the means, vote. Because your voice is just as important and because, if you don’t vote you don’t get to bitch. I don’t even care if you vote just so you get to bitch if your guy loses. Just vote.

2) My mom went to the Pally to Restore Sanity over the weekend. My 68 year old mom took her friends and her cane and her whole lotta moxie and headed for DC. I don’t think I could be any more enamored of her than I am right now. She’s not a protester, she’s not a radical, she’s a homebody. But she went because she felt strongly enough about the need for sanity and respect and a coherent dialogue in this country.

I saw this clip of Fox and Friends today.

My first reaction was..huh? Then confusion, then anger, then a mild rant. But me ranting doesn’t help coherent dialoge.

So, just this comment and I move on: I don’t understand how someone in the news media knows who Cat Steven’s is, but doesn’t know he changed his name to Yusaf Islam years ago.

Maybe I should have been a flower child. ::ponder::
