This bit of beauty is Russian ballet dancer Sergei Polunin, dancing to Hozier and filmed by David LaChapelle.

I have a couple thoughts:

1) This is one of the most amazing things I’ve seen and reminds me of how breathtaking Barishnikov was at this age.

2) If someone doesn’t out him in a Sia video, that’s a damn shame.

3) Since I’m currently obsessed with Four and Theo James thanks to reading the Divergent trilogy, this whole thing made me think of a dancing equivalent of the character and story.

But I watched this morning and I can’t even tell you how much I loved it.

Every once in a while, Jezebel will post something that gets me thinking. This one did.

It seems that this parody of Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines by was removed from You Tube for a short time and then put up again after comments were made.

Called Defined Lines, the video was made for the University of Auckland’s Law Revue by Adelaide Dunn, Olivia Lubbock and Zoe Ellwood.

Basically, these ladies took the premise of the original video and flipped it to make some pretty cogent points, IMHO.

What I can’t understand is why it got taken down. I’ll be honest, I hadn’t seen the whole Blurred Lines video, so I went looking. I found two versions. One made for regular airplay and a notably unblocked unrated version (warning, NSFW).

So, what. Is it okay to say naughty, sexual, innuendo filled things to and about women while grabbing your crotch — but saying naughty, sexual, innuendo filled things to and about men while simulating coming on their face (with whipped cream) is not?

I saw comments to the effect that use of the words “emasculation” and “castration” may have been at issue, but artistic license was used in both cases.

Either way, I’m sharing the video because I found it to be clever and because I believe that, unless you find both videos equally offensive (at their base, it’s the same issue of exploitation and sexualizing) you really can’t find wither offensive.

Heck, I don’t even think the unrated version of Burred Lines is offensive. Well, not in the traditional sense. Seems to me, if you’re going to have women running around topless and almost naked in your video, you should do something more interesting thank just make them walk around like models on a catwalk.

Y’know how Team Unicorn put out a video and a wave of people came out to unleash anger and vitriol and talk about how they’re not real geek girls and pandering and all that?

(If not, just go check the comments on their latest video for “For The Win” over on You Tube.)

I’ve seen a lot of commenting about the reaction, and the whole geek girls/pandering/hot chicks faking it thing came up again. (le sigh).

And I know it bugs people every time it happens. I know people come out and defend and feel angry and geek women want to Hulk smash and geek men want to come out and say “I’m not like those neanderthals” and all of that…

Well, I had a thought last night and I won’t leave my brain, so I want to share it and maybe that’ll put it to rest.

The people who go to the trouble to spew anger and/or hate and/or OMG HOT FAKE GEEK GIRLS SPEWING GEEK REFERENCES HAWWWWWWTTT NOT are trolls.

Trolls.

Those same people would be just as mean and angry and OMG about a video that was made by “regular looking” geek girls. But then they’d be laughing at how their ass didn’t fit in the costume, or how skinny they were or how their glasses looked or how girls don’t actually play video games and OMG FAKE GEEK GIRLS.

Trolls.

That’s all they are. They’re not looking for reasoned debate. They’re not looking to have a conversation. And they’re just as prevalent on geek sites as they are You Tube. They may be a bit less mean, but they happen.

And I think it comes down to one of two mindsets on the part of the poster:

1) That girl totally wouldn’t fuck me. Not ever. Screw her. FAKE!

2) I wouldn’t touch that with someone else’s dick. No way. FAKE.

I’m not saying everyone who questions the nature of women and their geekdom is a troll and I’m not saying that conversation isn’t good, but identifying trolls helps up better decide where we want to use the energy to fight and where we can just call a troll a troll and choose a more effective tactic.

That’s what Team Unicorn did. They called out the Unicorn Geek Corps to down vote the negative and leave positive comments. They used the system trolls love to use against them.

I think there’s a lesson in that.
