However, it’s not because of Say Anything as most women might explain.

Nope. My love for John Cusack was sparked by The Sure Thing and, while this scene wasn’t the scene that started the fire in my bosom, it was the one that sealed the deal.

To this day, I still want to know how much of this was improv.

First of all, we added the new Serenity Little Damn Heroes Jayne Animated Maquette

(which I bought at SDCC and jumped around like a total girl over and have a pic of, even if we don’t have one on the site yet.)

<------See? ;-)

Isn’t he Shiny?

Number 2 thing — I’ve been asked about mmy collection and I keep meaning to take pics but I keep forgetting. Plus a lot of it is tucked away. But this should make you laugh at me. One of my prized possessions? My Thundarr the Barbarian action figures!

Okay.

I know I was a week behind most of the known universe, but I did manage to make it to Star Trek this Saturday.

Not only did I get out to the movies, but we saw the first showing for half price, got free popcorn, avoided anything that looked like a line and had awesome seats.

There are benefits to not seeing a movie opening weekend ;-)

That said — wow.

In all honesty, I was a bit nervous about this one. I grew up watching Star Trek. I spent the years of my early childhood sprawled out on the (shag) carpet, chin cupped in my hands and little feet waving, and eyes wide.

So, when I heard they were making another movie, and then I heard J.J. Abrams was helming it, I felt that little tyke inside me get a bit nervous that she was going to have a bit of her childhood misused again.

I am happy to report that she spent much of the movie stuffing her face with popcorn and Twizzlers and pointing out cool stuff that she remembered from the original series.

All in all, I was very happy with the movie. It looked amazing. I loved the updated gadgets. The acting was really strong (which is always a plus for a Star Trek movie, let’s be honest) and it did a great job of feeding the existing Trek fans while nurturing new ones.

Of course, I have a plan to take my mom next weekend (maybe a double feature with Terminator: Salvation) and I don’t doubt I’ll have a delightful time nitpicking a bit at that time.

For now, I’m just going to enjoy my geek glee and leave it at that. ;-)

Looking back now, I know that every one of us has this moment. That it’s perfectly normal for pre-teens to go through this sort of thing and that I shouldn’t have been concerned at the time.

You see, I had kissed a girl and liked it — and the realization later in the evening that I may not be the same as all the other kids, caught me a bit off guard.

Even now, I remember how seriously I took the pondering of my future romantic direction. Did this mean I didn’t like boys? I still felt like I liked boys. There had been boys at the party and I certainly remember thinking they were cute. Maybe I was bisexual?*

I mean, I ruminated. Seriously. I went back over the day and the Star Wars themed birthday party and, as I recalled the kiss and the game that prompted it, the way we both giggled. The tilt of her head and the vest sliding off her shoulder….

Suddenly, I knew I was different.

I had a crush on a girl because she was dressed as Han Solo!

That was the moment I became keenly aware that I was a Geek.

How about you?

When did you have your “moment”?

(yes, even at 12, I was a pretty savvy kid, thanks to my mom).

I’m uber uber l33t! So uber uber l33t!

I kept trying to think of something to blog about and my brain kept skittering around like an Alien Facehugger.

Then, I ended up on You Tube after clicking a link from a friend and it hit me.

You need to watch this. Even if you’ve seen it a million times.

It will make you happy. Even if you don’t get it, I bet it still makes you laugh.

Seems to me if we’re all going to die of #swineflu, then we best go out laughing.

I love Hello Kitty.

It’s sorta bad.

Bad to the point that I have been known to stand glassy-eyed in the Sanrio store until I am physically pulled to safety and , even then, I’m likely to point at the store window and make sad puppy noises until I’m completely out of sight.

Still, most of the time, I’m safe. I mean — it’s not like I’m around it every day, right?

Well, that was until EE decided to post the new Hello Kitty items from Kurt S. Adler – ultimately bringing the temptation to the mountain, so to speak.

When I was a kid, I was limited to thinks like pencil toppers, or bubblegum <strike>flavored</strike> scented erasers, or puff ups. I mean, it was cool, but now…

Nao!?

There’s Hello Kitty Urban Vinyl. That’s not okay. That’s like sucking money right out of my wallet! There’s wall art and dolls and…and..

…and the Hello Kitty Punk Rock 5-Inch Glass Ornament.

Yeah. Hello Kitty in pink fishnets.

First things first, thank you for the answers to the question in my last post. I mean, it kind of helps to know you’re not…

First things first, thank you for the answers to the question in my last post. I mean, it kind of helps to know you’re not talking to yourself. Know what I mean? I mean, that’s crazy and I don’t want people to think I’m crazy and isthatabigbunnyrabbit…

..um.

Yeah.

Anyway.

I have Nathan Fillion on the brain at the moment. I heard that his new show Castle already got canceled, but I’m really hoping it was a wicked rumor. The show isn’t amazing, but I’m hardly going to complain about spending 44 minutes starting at Fillion. Know what I mean?

In other news, I’m not 100% sure what I think about the BSG series finale. It’s an odd mix of some of the best acting I’ve ever seen on TV, some of the oddest plot structure ever and that feeling that they’re being forced to cram way too much stuff in at the last minute.

Still, sad as I am to see it go, it’ll be off the air before I have to look at the “SyFy” logo (don’t even get me started on that) so I can turn the page and the channel all at the same time.

Not to mention, I got my “Big Frakkin‘ Bag” from SDCC last year, so the SciFi booth has provided me with enough joy for one lifetime, thankyouverymuch.

I guess, in a way, I’m used to the shows I like being cancelled. Nowhere Man, Brimstone, Firefly. The list goes on.

Except for Law & Order. That remains and, while it’s not always perfect, to quote Stitch it’s “Still good. Yeah. Still good.”

Speaking of which. I must have this Stitch Digital Hi-Vision 20″ LCD HDTV!

Here’s hoping I have recovered from my Geekgasm well enough to type.

::deep breath::

Okay.

So.

I was going through the site and stumbled across the Gremlins Gizmo Craft Label Statue from Jun Planning.

Now…

I’m sure there are situations when there’s something exciting about a grown woman being reduced to moans and whimpers as she whispers “wantneedwantneedgiveittome”…

…but I have a feeling that, in this case, that’s not the word one might use ;-)

Still. Want. Need. GIVEITTOME!

I saw this little guy in person and I think that the Hasbro FurReal Friends Zambi the Elephant is truly adorable and awesome.

First of all, he kisses and wraps his truck around your finger. He wiggles his ears and he’s obscenely cute.

Plus Hasbro is committing to donate 50 percent of the net profits from the sales of ZAMBI THE BABY ELEPHANT to the PROJECT ZAMBI Fund* – a mission that cares about children orphaned by AIDS in Africa.

Is it bad that I want to buy him, take him home and then download the Baby Elephant Walk for when I set him loose in the living room?

I got to see one of these in action and I heard about the other one. But both of them make me squee in delight and I’m now trying to figure out how to hack the Force Trainer to power the R2. Any suggestions?

So, this is the Star Wars The Force Trainer. (child not included)

Article here so you can read more about it.

And this, is the Star Wars Clone Wars Remote Control R2-D2 (imagine delighted sounds here)

Just gotta say. It’s a good time to be a geek.

Credit to the Star Wars Blog for the pics. Because they know everything. ;-)

Granted, I’m not sure about the teeth. But the hair and the cape and the…rest of Jareth is dreamy and scary and all of the things he was in the movie.

And Hoggle. Well, can’t you just imagine putting him in the fridge for a friend to find next to the butter or something? ;-)

I wish I knew what it was about this Pony that made me like it so much. I mean, in all seriousness, I don’t DO…

I wish I knew what it was about this Pony that made me like it so much. I mean, in all seriousness, I don’t DO Ponies. I never collected MLP and I hated the commercials and still…

still…

I adore the My Little Pony Blue Collector Pony more than I can say.

It’s got to be the color scheme. Right? I mean, I love cobalt blue and the contrast against the black is awesome and all I can think when I look at it is “GOTH PWNY! Squee!”.

But it doesn’t mean I don’t feel guilty about it.

Think they have a support group for this problem?

I’ve gotten into the habit of trading tweets with Matt Blum of GeekDad, so when he linked his article asking Who Are the Best Geek…

I’ve gotten into the habit of trading tweets with Matt Blum of GeekDad, so when he linked his article asking Who Are the Best Geek Role Models for Your Kids (Other Than You)?, I clicked through pretty much right away.

Couple things. I’m not a GeekDad, I don’t have kids and I don’t plan on having kids. So, that sort of leaves me out of the question as a whole. Still, it got me thinking about my who my role models were and what it means to be a “Girl Geek”.

Not to sound maudlin or anything (these are just the facts) but I didn’t really have any Geek role models growing up. I spent most of my adolescence and high school time being a Geek when Geek = Nerd and Nerd = Social Pariah who sits alone at lunch. (Gotta love the 80’s!).

I think I grew up defending my Geekitude with a big brassy vengeance and a chip on my shoulder. So what if they didn’t understand why I cut school to wait in line for Return of the Jedi at the Egyptian Theater when I was 13. I understood it. I knew I was part of something.

But it did sort of mean that I swaggered through most of my time in high school mostly misunderstood and rather lonesome.

Around the age of 25, I dropped into the online world of the Red Dragon Inn (on a then very up and coming web service that shall remain nameless. If you RP’d in the RDI, you know of which I speak) and, in very short order, found an entire community of Geeks.

It was as if the floodgates opened. Here were people who read the books I read, liked the movies I liked, and could quote entire scenes from Star Wars without a single error. Just. Like. Me.

15 years later, here I am, self professed Girl Geek living in a world in which Geek = Cool and Girl Geek = Sexy (well, in certain circles).

Still, I’d be hard pressed to say I could easily point to role models for my 15 year old self and she still had to go through most of that awkward process of Geek self acceptance alone.

But, maybe, the having to go it alone gave me the foundation for being the Geek I am now. Learning processes are like that. You have to, by definition, learn.

Right?

Oh, but I will say — having a Geek president with a sense of humor and who’s kind of sexy doesn’t hurt either, Matt. If I had a kid, he’s likely be someone I’d point to, too. ;-)
