The Folks At Snuggie Want To Wish You A Happy Hannukah. Oy to the Vey.

This, my friends, is one of those times where (as a nice Jewish girl) I pretty much avoid comment.

However, my grandfather would have said "Who's the Shiksa blonde?"

Oy!

Awww. The TSA Doesn't Want To Be Too Touchy-Feely This November 24th

How cute. The TSA is warning that they proposed "opt-out" on November 24th could be a "mistake".

Gee. So, people not doing the scanners (which means they have to get the "pat down") is gonna inconvenience the TSA? Awww. Poor babies.

1st Grade Geek Girl Is Getting Bullied For Liking Star Wars? Not On My Watch. Geek Squad, Activate

If you're not up for a rant and a call to action, move along. Because I am SO not going to let this slide.

Fellow Geek Girl Jill Pantozzi posted a Facebook link to this article over at EPBOT about 1st grader Katie being bullied by her classmates for carrying a Star Wars water bottle to school. The article asks for other geek girls to drop a note of support to Katie so she realizes she's not alone in this.

Okay, that right there was already enough to send me over to the site and I was about to add my comment to the (currently) 364 but I wanted to click on the original story to get the details on this just for my reference.

And this is where I saw this. It wasn't in the first link and it took me some reading to find it, but this is what really bugged me.

Katie loves Star Wars, and she was very excited about her new items. For the first few months of school, she proudly filled her water bottle herself and helped me pack her lunch each morning.
But a week ago, as we were packing her lunch, Katie said, "My Star Wars water bottle is too small. It doesn't hold enough water. Can I take a different one?" She searched through the cupboard until she found a pink water bottle and said, "I'll bring this."
I was perplexed. "Katie, that water bottle is no bigger than your Star Wars one. I think it is actually smaller."
"It's fine, I'll just take it," she insisted.
I kept pushing the issue, because it didn't make sense to me. Suddenly, Katie burst into tears.
She wailed, "The first grade boys are teasing me at lunch because I have a Star Wars water bottle. They say it's only for boys. Every day they make fun of me for drinking out of it. I want them to stop, so I'll just bring a pink water bottle."

The boys are teasing her because Star Wars is for boys and, to top it off, she thinks she needs a pink water bottle to avoid more hassle.

::geek girl growl::

Okay, I'm not sure who's raising these boys, but I've got half a mind to whap their parents up the head for the varying levels of wrong here. Star Wars isn't just for boys. It never has been. And this poor kid -- who's just out there expressing herself (and who had a water bottle that matched her Star Wars backpack. Extra coolness points!) is getting flak to the point that she's willing to come home and give up something that makes her happy to avoid being teased.

I don't know about you, but I'm hoping someone from the Star Wars Universe shows up at this kid's school just to surprise her at class. Or that Lucasfilm sends her something special, or that someone does something to reinforce for this kid just how cool she is for being a Star Wars geek girl at her age.

Think I'm making a big deal? This isn't just about the water bottle. This is about identity and this kid's got enough to deal with.

"I don't want to be too different," Katie lamented.  "I'm already different.  Nobody else in my class wears glasses or a patch, and nobody else was adopted.  Now I'm even more different, because of my Star Wars water bottle."

Hey Katie. I know lots of girls who went through the same thing at your age. Who got teased for being different and who liked things other people thought were for boys. Who wore glasses and who were adopted and who had other things that made them "different" than the "normal" kids.

The truth is, it's not easy being different sometimes. But every one of those girls has gornw up to be really amazing and unique and special. They're geek girls and they love Star Wars and some of them even live in Chicago. ;-)

Katie, honey, you have lots of girls out here who love Star Wars and who think you're super cool.

You're not alone.

I promise. I really, really promise.

Update: The geek girl force jumped on this. From Bonnie Burton to Felicia Day and all the geek girls and guys in between.  I am amazed by each and every one of you.

Nov 22 Update: There's been a HUGE response on this issue. You're gonna want to check it out here. Katie - An Ordinary Story with an Extraordinary Response

Couple arrested after 2 MPH drunken driving spree to nearby strip club on stolen Wal-Mart scooter

Someone needs to snap this Digger up to write headlines, because he may have written one of the best I've read in ages.

"Couple arrested for driving 2 MPH to strip club on stolen Wal-Mart scooter"

There's just something about that sentence that cracked me up.

Granted, he left out the fact that they were intoxicated at the time. I mean, that would have just been another plus to the readability factor.

But maybe he thought "Couple arrested after 2 MPH drunken driving spree to nearby strip club on stolen Wal-Mart scooter" didn't have the same ring to it ;-)

Oh, the humanity.

My blog post for the day

I seem to have been knocked pretty squarely on my ass by a sinus infection, which means my brain is on hiatus.

I figured I'd just tell you guys that honetly instead of looking for something to post in my sleep deprived state. (why else would I be awake at this time of the morning?)

In other news, I just ate a bunch of Lorna Doones. They're good.

10 Things You Should Avoid Posting on Twitter (for 2010)

I'm still coming down off the high that was my trip to Quantum Mechanix yesterday and I'm working on getting a post done about my actual trip for Nerd Approved.

However, in the meantime, I have to share this pic that won't be in the story for quality reasons and explain that my hands were shaking and that's why it's blurry but...

I Love Neil Diamond And I Need Help

There's a push on to get Neil Diamond inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.

Neil Diamond is, simply put, a legend. He's contributed to music in more ways that you can likely imagine and he's still out there doing what he does best.

I know there are people out there who won't understand, but if you know Neil and you love Neil, then sign the petition at Neil2011.com and check out the Twitter and Facebook to join the Believers.

Thanks Agent M for the link ;-)

Thoughts on Torchwood Part 1: So People Don't Like Gwen Cooper?

A quick preface: Over the last few months I've watched 4 seasons of Doctor Who and all of Torchwood. I know I was late to the game. I actually managed to avoid spoilers during that time and so, I'll put a spoiler alert in here just in case you're like me and took your time getting here.

About a month ago as I was watching I forget what episode of Torchwood, I paused the TiVo and declared to the Geekboy, "I like Gwen Cooper." (I do that sometimes. Spontaneous declarations. It wasn't an argument or anything. I was just overwhelmed with the like and so I decided to say something)

From across the room, I hear a chuckle and the long time Whovian and Torchwood fan that is the Geekboy answers, "Oh...there's a lot of people who don't. You'd be surprised."

Really?

So, I watched further. I even watched trying to figure out why people didn't like her. People not liking Owen, that I could understand. Heck, there are days I wanted to kick Tosh in the teeth. But Gwen?

I asked Twitter and, yep, the responses came back. Negative over positive pretty much 2 to 1. They didn't like her. For a number of reasons. The cheating definitely came up. Her thoughtlessness. Some people think she's whiny, others just don't like her and didn't say why.

And I can see where everyone's coming from. I can. But, in a way, all of those things envelop back into why I like her.

Gwen's human.

She does all the things real people do. All the screwed up, "non-thinking but gut reaction" things people do. Real people cheat on their fiance's because they feel more "alive" with someone else even if they know it isn't going to work. Real people forget they might step on toes when they suddenly come into a situation and they have a better feel for how to handle it. Real people go from the gut and feel and can be sensitive to one person while totally stepping all over someone else.

I've cried more because of things Gwen did or said because I understand them on a gut level, I suppose. Her unwillingness to postpone a wedding even when preggers with an alien because she wasn't going to let one more thing get between she and Rhys? I loved that. Actually, I loved "Something Borrowed" on a number of levels.

There's a moment in "Exit Wounds" when Gwen takes over in the police station that Rhys looks at her and says she's "brilliant" as he's watching her take control of the situation. I thought pretty much the same.

And let's just say it. Yes, she has a thing for Jack. How could she not. How could anyone with a heartbeat not? But Jack's someone you have a thing for, because you just can't help but love him. You don't postpone a wedding for him and you don't forget that you love your fiance for him. But, yeah, you have that moment somewhere before you say "I do" where you smile to yourself and you wonder "what if?"

Like I said, human.

I'm not even sure why I wanted to have this conversation. I know I just wanted to write it. Maybe to change a mind or two. Maybe to get feedback from people as to why they dislike her so much.

I actually think Russell T Davies looks to make a lot of people human. From the way they love to the way they fight, to the way they struggle with being human. It seems to me he has a plan. Actually, I'm getting ahead of myself. That's for another post entirely.

Okay, back to this post.

I guess, in a way, I just wanted to share the Gwen I see. And maybe to ask other people why they dislike her so much.

::grin::

I'm human. I have to ask ;-)

Serenity Meets Inception In This Insanely Good Mashup

Geek Boy's Desk reveals hidden truths.

I love it. I ask a sassy question and I end up with a blog post idea!

This pic comes from the desk of Ericover at IGN. I'm mildly concerned that Eric may have a few anger issues to work out, but we'll leave the armchair psych to someone who has an armchair.

Maybe I should make some kind of "Desk Pic of the Week" segment for Friday and ask people to submit pictures. ::grin:: Imagine the possibilities.

I Want To Wear David Tennant And Say I Aim To Misbehave For Free ;-)

Firefly Browncoat Aim To Misbehave T-Shirt

Entertainment Earth just added new Firefly, Doctor Who and Dr. Horrible T-shirts -- including the shirt I've been meaning to get forEVER! (look up and don't mock me. I was always working at SDCC ;p )

Here's why I'm telling you.

Entertainment Earth is having a t-shirt sale and for every 3 shirts you buy, you get the 4th free. It doesn't matter if they're in stock or pre-order. There's no "US only restriction". It's just buy 3 and get the fourth free. There's close to 600 shirts at last count, so I'm guessing there might be a few that would make your holiday shopping easier.

It's only till November 8th, tho, so if you're gonna do it, I suggest you get on it.

Plus, cause I just...I.../swoon...

Doctor Who 10th Doctor Collage T-Shirt
David Tennant's face across my chest? Yes please!

Sale link in case you missed it up top. ;-)

Politics, Voting and The Fox & Friends Reaction To The Rally To Restore Sanity

I generally keep the politics off the blog and try to keep it to myself. But grant me just a little leeway today.

1) If you're in the US -- Vote. Please go vote. I don't care who you vote for, but if you have the means, vote. Because your voice is just as important and because, if you don't vote you don't get to bitch. I don't even care if you vote just so you get to bitch if your guy loses. Just vote.

2) My mom went to the Pally to Restore Sanity over the weekend. My 68 year old mom took her friends and her cane and her whole lotta moxie and headed for DC. I don't think I could be any more enamored of her than I am right now. She's not a protester, she's not a radical, she's a homebody. But she went because she felt strongly enough about the need for sanity and respect and a coherent dialogue in this country.

I saw this clip of Fox and Friends today.

My first reaction was..huh? Then confusion, then anger, then a mild rant. But me ranting doesn't help coherent dialoge.

So, just this comment and I move on: I don't understand how someone in the news media knows who Cat Steven's is, but doesn't know he changed his name to Yusaf Islam years ago.

Maybe I should have been a flower child. ::ponder::

Totally Tubular '80s Toys: Nostalgia For a Low Low Price.

Topless Robot mentioned Totally Tubular '80s Toys and, after clicking over to look at it, I had to share. ;-)

Check the table of contents. ::grin:: Something tells me your "nostalgic side is going to have a blast.

The book has a year-by-year look at the greatest toys of the '80s, over 500 images and lists of the top 10 TV shows, movies, and music for each year (::grin:: I'll bet there are a few surprise reminders in that list)

p.s. Alf on the cover kinda freaks me out, tho.

Blizzard Adds A Red Shirted "Fact Checker" To The Upcoming Expansion. Sweet!

It was also confirmed by WoW's Lead World Designer, Alex Afrasiabi.
