Geek Girls, Like Unicorns, Don't Exist

The talk is out there. The theory that the majority of girls who call themselves geeks aren't geeks. They're just chicks who wear extra small Green Lantern T-shirts to show off their boobs, not because of the logo but to get attention at cons. They're girls who think they're geeky because they can work a lap top well enough to get a webcam working.

Example: the following formspring exchange between @TheNerdyBird and someone who chose to remain anonymous because he pretty much assumed he'd be villified by the geek girl community.

Done reading?

Here's a guy who's assuming that just because a geek girl has the word "boobs" in her blog title, she's exploiting herself. Forget that she's being ironic or that it might be her way of addressing the idea that she can't be a girl and read comics.

Nope. She's doing just what Hooters girls do. She's using her boobs to sell the geek girl brand.

Yeah, I'll admit, I got all "rawr". I wanted to go off on a rant about how I'm a geek girl and I want to be taken seriously. But then I would have been affirming the whole reason he chose to remain anonymous, right?

But what really bothered me last night was the fact that this argument seems to come up again and again. Geek guy gets mad because geek girl gets attention. She must be using sex.

So, I grabbed one of my fave geek guys and asked him about it. Because I wanted to understand his perspective on why geek guys might have a kneejerk reaction to a geek girl's request (sometimes demand) for respect in the geek world.

Just a few things he said:
  • Male geeks have to work harder to be noticed than female geeks.
  • If he had two Twitter accounts (one male, one female) and tweeted the same way on both, he'd gain more followers on the female stream than the male.
  • If a geek had a penis instead of boobs, would she be as 'popular', or would she be just another pithy comic book geek in the crowd?

They're all good thoughts and questions.

I even added that, when it comes to Twitter I have may have more followers because I have a lot of girls who follow. Geek boys and geek girls both like geek girls. I don't know if geek guys get that sort of crossover.

Which led me to wonder if part of this is about guys being "guys". If that makes sense?

Problem is, I'm not a guy. I have no understanding of the male side of this situation, which means all I have are assumptions -- and you know what they say about assumptions...

Bottom line, it bugs me. And so I had an idea -- maybe even a challenge-- for the guys and gals out there who have geek followings on Twitter and in the Blogospehere.

What if we did some kind of round table discussion/summit/whathaveyou at SDCC? Get an equal number of guys and gals together and have the conversation? Like really have the conversation? Blog it, report about it. Make it a cross over conversation.

Maybe we can find a way to come to some sort of consensus. Maybe not.

Either way, it'd be pretty dang interesting.

Thoughts?

People Of The Park: My New Obsession.

You've seen People of Walmart, but have you seen People Of The Park?

I don't even know how to explain the mixture of delight and dismay I feel when I look at this site.

Because I know that, one day, I'm gonna get caught in a picture on it and I won't know whether to laugh or cry. ;-)

Get Mal's Coat For Less Coin? Shiny!

Want to know why I love my job?

Because, while I squeed with fangirl glee when I saw the new Serenity Malcolm Reynolds Browncoat Replica hit the Entertainment Earth site...

...it was chased by a mild groan at the pricing. ($359.00. Zao!)

However, I went to bat for Browncoats everywhere and the Powers That Be gave us a little love and dropped it to $319.00.

But that's not all. If you use code EETWEET12 at check out, you get free Super Saver - FedEx Smartpost shipping on orders totaling more than $79.00, which means you're getting the best price in the 'Verse!

Serenity Malcolm Reynolds Browncoat Replica

Baby Skulls and Cross Boxes? Yes Please.

Wanna see something pretty? ;-)

Before you start worrying that I'm advocating infanticide for the sake of art, I'll mention that this epic awesome babyskull is made with plaster of paris ;-) Which means I can ooh and ahh all I want.

This is just one of many amazing pieces. You can check out the rest of them here (via SuperPunch)

And, because I'm a fan of skulls, crossbones and Dia De Los Muertos, I figured it was a good time to show off a bit of the goodness from Skellramics.

While I'm able to get my Skellramics fix at SDCC (they usually have a booth right next to the Entertainment Earth booth), I know some people may not know about them. So, I wanted to show off one of my current favorites. ;-)

You can check out the shop here or get more on all things Skellramics at their website.

A Moment..

I know I mostly tweet for work stuff and I generally keep it pretty light, but I just got off the phone with my mom and aunt and wanted to take just a moment here to tell you something a little more personal.

My cousin, who's not much older than I am, is dying of cancer and has chosen not to continue the battle. Which means he'll be gone from the planet in a matter of days.

I respect his choice. I understand it and, while he and I have never been very close, there are many in my family who will be amazingly struck by his loss.

Just two months in to 2010, I'm faced with the loss of two people who are family -- either by blood or by choice. The ripples have been non-stop and I don't anticipate they effects will slow for some time to come.

But there's one thing I keep coming back to with all of this. One thought I've had.

If I died today, this minute, would the people around me know how much I loved them? Would they know what they meant to me. Would they know what an impact they made in my life?

If you can't say yes to those questions. If you know you've left things unsaid or undone...do what needs doing and say what needs saying.

If you can do that, the ripples of your passing might hold less pain and more smiles for the ones you leave behind.

If You Talked About It Today, I'll Bet Entertainment Earth Has It

People have been linking to items this morning and, because I don't know if people really know about Entertainment Earth and the breadth of items we carry, I thought I'd do a little demonstration.

amy_geek posted a link to the preview for The Guild comic at CBR.

The Guild #1 Comic Book is available for pre-order at EE.

@Agent_M tumbl'd his @starwars lightsaber chopsticks in full effect.

Entertainment Earth not only has the chopsticks he's using for order, but several other Kotobukiya chopsticks.

Bioshock? Yep. Mass Effect? It's there. Plus DC Universe, LEGO, Iron Man and more.

I may need to do a survey. Think of a current or upcoming item and search it on EE. Tell me if you find it or not.

I'm betting you'll find more than you think. ;-)

Oh and, if you have a blog or site and you talk about this stuff, then I may have to poke you if you're not an EE affiliate. Just sayin'.

Monday Squee: Singin' Savage

There are times advertising not only works, it transcends.

Puma got a group of pub lads together to cover Savage Garden and it's one of the more awesome things on the planet. What is it about Brits, beer and bald heads that just work? ;-)

Thanks to @heartlessdoll and @SheChive for the heads up ;-)

Lautner Fan Calls Out Universal: Your Wolfman Ripped Off Twilight!

There are times I love my job, my life and the internet. Today is one of those days.

I present to you, what may be the most amazing letter on the internet in recent memory.

To whom this may concern:

This movie was a complete waste and I feel that it offends ALL Twilight Fans around the world, that including myself. For one, it was a COMPLETE remakingof the Wolf Pack from the Twilight Saga: New Moon. It gives the werewolves a bad name and makes them look like some deformed mutation of a rabid dog. I actually started to like werewolves after seeing Jacob Black and all his awesomeness on the big screen at the movies. That was until I saw your crappy remake of what you call to be a "were wolf". I don't see how you live with yourself for making it the way you did. If I made this movie, I would be ashamed to even admit that I owned it. How can a werewolf be killed with a silver bullet?

There's more...so much more..but to read the rest, you gotta head over to Latino Review. ;-) (and Digg it if you are so inclined. It needs to be seen by the world)

ToyFair 2010 - An L.A. Geek Girl Freezes For The Love Of Toys!

I know I'm about 4 days late, but I was too busy having fun (drinking) seeing toys ( nibbling geekbabes) and networking (nibbling geek boys) to get anything written up during the actual show. Oh and, I was in snow. I'll get back to that part.

Add the fact that I was in NYC for what could be considered my first time (my other trip didn't count. No, I'm not gonna say why ;p), and I'm lucky I'm not still running around like a dervish!

Lucky for me, lots of actual media types (way more professional and skilled than I, I must add) were taking pictures of the very cool stuff I saw, so I can link to their amazing images while talking about the toys!

It wasn't my first stop of the trip, but it's my first review because I LOVE these! I'm talking about the new Warcraft action figures from DC Direct. Three in particular.

First up: Worgen Spy Garm Whitefang

Worgen? Win. Getting a look at a figure for one of the two new races being introduced in Cataclysm was already cool. Spy leads me to think rogue, which is just cool. Worgen Rogue? Yes please. And it just looks -amazing-.

Credit: Jesse Angelo/UGO

Then, well...

There was the Arthas Menethil Deluxe Collector Figure. Yeah. Deluxe. Honestly, one of the coolest things I saw at the show and I am SO excited!

Credit: Jesse Angelo/UGO

And, while we have a pic of her up at Entertainment Earth, I don't think people really understand just how amazing the new Sylvanas looks. Maybe it's because we had to list her as the World of Warcraft Series 6 Forsaken Queen Figure, so people don't immediately think of her, but I got to see the Hawtness herself and, even if it's just a phone cam shot, I think it captures her pretty well ;-)

I'm starting there and I'm by no means done. But I'm still recovering. ;-)

UGO has a great gallery of pics for the new Warcraft figures and I'd definitely suggest checking it out. because, well, they're much better at pics than I am and Tracey John did some great reporting and made gorgeous galleries.

Geek Babes Break Down The Boobies

A collaborative post by @geekgirldiva and @geekgirls

It has come to our attention that boobs, regardless of size and shape, do sometimes tend to get in the way of our geekiness. So, we decided to weigh the pros and cons.

For example:
storm trooper lady· Boobs, despite popular belief, are not good typists. In fact, there are nearly as inaccurate as predictive text.
· After walking around a convention all day, my shoulders are in severe pain. And that's without any of the swag bags!
· Boobs are the reason for Hottie Hans’ face looking all distorted in my favorite Star Wars tee.
· Boobs make people think that I couldn’t possibly know the difference between a browser and a search engine, or the importance of up up down down left right left right select start.
· I have to hold them when running away from zombies, which not only makes me look funny, it prevents me from holding onto additional weaponry.
· When enjoying a walk listening to my favorite tunes, boobs continuously pull my earbuds out.
· People like to toss dice in my direction during a roll and ask for extra points if they get them in my cleavage.
For the pros, head over to the Geek Girls Network to read more ;-)

And yes gentleman, we know if you had them YOU would play with them all the time. So, tell ya what, get your OWN and stop trying to grab ours without asking ;P storm trooper lady

One For The Money, Two For The NO!

Variety is reporting that Katherine Heigl is attached to star in "One for the Money" for Columbia Pictures and Lakeshore Entertainment.

Allow me to say it for you:

"Has it ever occurred to you that you might be delusional?"
— Janet Evanovich (Fearless Fourteen)

Katherine Heigl? Stephanie Plum could take Heigl out with one well tossed donut!

I'm sorry, but what part of Katherine Heigl's blond, thin, patrician profile screams Jersey Girl with a pastry fetish and a knack for blowing up cars?

Sandra Bullock. Yes. Marisa Tomei. Sure. Heck, toss any number of women in a pair of too tight 501's and a frizzy wig and I might even buy it.

But Katherine Heigl, while she may have some box office cred, doesn't have the sexual (albeit accidental) heat to warm a sex starved college kid, let alone a stud like Joe Morelli or a cool guy like Ranger.

Do. Not. Want!

A & E Can Kiss My "Zaftig" Arse

TV Squad reported today that Kirstie Alley will be back on TV in the new A & E series "Kirstie Alley's Big Life"

The press release reads: A& E presents "Kirstie Alley's Big Life," a new real-life series that will chronicle the extraordinary life of Golden Globe and two-time Emmy winner Kirstie Alley from her journey with her weight loss program to her life as a single mother trying to raise two normal teenagers in the Hollywood spotlight.

Kirstie Alley? Pardon me, but haven't we seen this show? And hasn't every attempt Kirstie's made to lose weight been a short term victory? I mean, you're talking about a woman who got bounced by Jenny Craig for not being able to stay on a program she was endorsing?

Can we be honest here? Can we discuss what this is really about?

This isn't an attempt to show an everyday single woman struggling to lose weight and raise her kids. This isn't about how hard it is to lose weight in a day of fast food, high fructose corn syrup, and working full time to feed your family.

This is about putting a woman on television that everyone expects to be a self defeating, self mocking, train wreck of a once "thin and famous" actress.

Because that's what makes people watch. It's what makes women who battle their weight feel a bit better about their missteps. It makes people feel "better than" someone like Kirstie Alley, the once shining star.

It's just like a bad night of Jerry Springer.

Nice move there, A & E. When Kirstie can't lose weight, and when the show becomes just another reason she needs therapy, you can pat yourself on the back for having made women with weight issues feel just that much more screwed up.

Screw Edward, Give me Team Rhett vs. Team Scarlett!

Just spotted Gone with the Wind with Vampires over at Topless Robot and wholeheartedly echo Rob when he says " It's a bit subtle, but it's incredibly well done, and extremely well edited."

Gone With The Wind is a personal favorite of mine and, I have to say, I'd totally watch this movie!

Not to mention, Pittypat with fangs may be the most awesome thing I've seen this year.

In Loving Memory of Jonathan Glyer

My friend Jonathan Glyer was killed Friday January 29th. From the amazing letter his wife Sarah wrote, I know he was smiling that day. I know it was almost immediate and I know he was killed doing what he loved.

If you’ll allow it, I want to tell you about Jon. About who he was in my life and why I’ll miss him so very much.

Jon was the main healer in my Warcraft raiding group. He was, without a doubt, the best healer I’ve ever seen in action. He was an officer in The Grey Order, a member of the Borked cast and someone I spoke to almost every day, even if only for five minutes.

He was a friend, a co-hort, a political sparring partner, a confidante and a mischievous little snot. We laughed together, we fought and we made up and, when it was all said and done, we’d log on the next day, hop into vent and do it all again.

He loved his Seattle Sounders, trying to figure out how to machine a piece of metal to a millimeter’s perfection, his cat Miles, his wife Sarah’s cooking (oh, he loved her cooking and he loved sharing how good her cooking was with all of us over Vent – guaranteeing a volley of groans and jealous whimpers as he munched happily).

He was best friends with David Eagle and Jonathan Mabe.

Which is what makes this so very hard.

Jon was so much a part of people’s lives. He touched so many people. He was so full of life and so full of laughter. Every one I know who has remarked on him has talked about not knowing how to fill the space his passing has left behind.

The ripples are evident. Our raiding team is…fractured. Our guild in shock. So many people have left messages for Sarah and Jon, for his friends, his family, letting them know just what Jon meant to them and just how much he’ll be missed.

This is a man I spoke to for the better part of a year. A man who I only had the pleasure of hugging twice in my life, but who was a very real part of my life and my heart.

A man I would definitely have traded places with if I thought it would mean he could be back here and filling the space for those around him. The space that, for so many, can’t be filled.

But I know what he’d say.

He’d make a rude noise and tell me that I was just being silly. That the space I’d leave behind would be just as big and that when you gotta go, you gotta go and quit bein’ all emo. He’d likely start munching a cookie and then go on about how he had them and how good they were and, before long, we’d be laughing together and the conversation would be forgotten.

It’s his laugh I’ve been hearing for the last two days.

His laugh and, would you believe, he and I echoing Rotface at the start of the fight in ICC. The two of us squealing “Wheeeeeeee!” as Jon Mabe calmly chuckles and Dave exclaims “Wil Wheaton!” and in we go to die again like a bunch of mad fools.

It’s not that I don’t feel the pain. I feel the loss. I see the people around me affected and I want to get on a plane and look his wife in the eye and let her know just how much I loved her husband – and how so much of what I loved about him was created by his love of her.

Jonathan Glyer was an amazing human being. He was my friend. And now he’s my Angel.

I feel blessed to have an Angel like Jon.

Especially one with a laugh like his.
